Buying Guides for Curtains, Blinds, Sofas and Rugs

Most buying advice is written for dry, temperate homes. These guides explain the types, sizes and materials behind each product, compare the options honestly, and say which choices hold up in a humid coastal house.

01L Shape Sofa Size: Dimensions, Clearances and the Chaise SideHow long each side of an L-shaped sofa usually runs, how deep it sits, which way the chaise should face, and how to fit one into a Goan living room without blocking the breeze or the way to the balcony.
023 Seater Sofa Size: Dimensions, Clearances and Getting It InWhat a three-seater usually measures, why three seats do not always seat three people, the space to leave around it, and how to make sure it will actually get up the stairs.
03The Best Wooden Sofa for a Humid Home: A Buying GuideTeak, sheesham, mango and rubberwood compared on what matters in a Goan monsoon: how much each timber moves, how it resists insects and decay, and which finish and seat suit it.
04How to Choose the Best Recliner Sofa: A Buying GuideRecliners are bought on a two-minute sit in a showroom and lived with for years. What to test, what to measure, which upholstery copes with a Goan summer, and what goes wrong with the mechanism.
05Lounge Sofa, Chaise Longue or Daybed: Which Lounger Suits Your HomeSome rooms need somewhere to lie back more than somewhere to sit up. How a lounge sofa, a chaise and a daybed differ, where each earns its place in a Goan house, and how to size and cushion one.
06Sectional vs Sofa and Chairs: Which Suits Your RoomA corner sofa seats the most people for its floor; a sofa with armchairs adapts to almost anything. How to decide for a long Goan hall, a villa that fills up for feasts, or a family that may move.
07Best Sofa Fabric for a Humid Coastal HomePerformance polyester, solution-dyed acrylic, cotton, linen, velvet, chenille and leatherette, judged on what actually ends a sofa's life in Goa: mildew, sun, claws, sand and heat.
08Sofa Cum Bed Design: Which Mechanism Suits Your Home?Pull-out, click-clack, fold-out or futon. How each sofa bed opens, how well it sleeps, how much floor it takes, and which survives a guest room that stays shut half the year.
09Sofa Cover Cloth: Which Fabric Washes, Fits and Lasts?A cover cloth is washed, dried and refitted again and again, which upholstery fabric is rarely asked to survive. How to pick one that keeps its size, its colour and its shape on your sofa.
10Elastic Cover for Sofa or Tailored Cover: Which Is Better?A stretch cover goes on in minutes; a tailored one is cut to your sofa. How each holds on, how it feels, how it washes in the rains, and which suits a family, a rental or a sofa with a dog.
11Sofa Legs: Height, Materials and Replacements for Goan FloorsLegs decide whether a mop reaches under the sofa, whether air moves beneath it, and whether the feet rot or rust on a floor that is wet every morning. What to choose, and how to change them.
12Best Curtain Rods: Types, Materials and What Survives Salt AirWhich curtain rod lasts depends less on how it looks in the shop and more on what it is made of, how far it spans, and how close your window is to the sea.
13What Are Roman Blinds? Styles, Mechanisms and Fabrics ExplainedA Roman blind is a curtain that folds upwards instead of drawing sideways. How it is built decides how it looks, how safe it is, and how it copes with a Goan monsoon.
14What Are Zebra Blinds and How Do They Work? Two layers of striped fabric, one chain, and a surprising amount of control. Here is how day-and-night blinds really behave, including the parts the showroom does not mention.
15Smart Curtains Explained: Openers, Motors and Voice ControlA smart curtain can mean a small gadget clipped to your existing rod or a motorised track built into the ceiling. They solve different problems, and only one of them is a long-term fitting.
16Noise-Reducing Curtains: What They Can and Can't Do in a Goan HomeCurtains can make a noisy room calmer, but not in the way most listings promise. Here is what fabric genuinely does to sound, and where the real fixes lie.
17Invisible Grill or Mosquito Net? Two Different Jobs on One BalconyAn invisible grill is there to stop a fall. A mosquito net is there to stop an insect. Owners often weigh one against the other, but they do different jobs, and many Goan balconies need both.
18Mosquito Net for the Bed, or Screens on the Windows?A net over the bed protects one sleeper for the hours they are asleep. Screens on the windows and doors protect the whole room, all day. In a Goan monsoon there is a place for each, and some rooms are better with both.
19Mosquito Net for a Sliding Door: Choosing for Balcony and Garden DoorsSliding, pleated or roller: the right mosquito net for a balcony sliding door or a pair of garden French doors depends on who walks through it, how hard the wind blows and what the frame is made of.
20Plastic Curtains for Balconies: Clear PVC Rain Curtains for the MonsoonTransparent PVC curtains keep sideways monsoon rain off a balcony, balcão or sit-out without shutting out the light. They work well when they are chosen, fixed and ventilated properly, and badly when they are not.
21The Best Wallpaper for Humid Walls: Choosing Paper for a Goan HomeThe best wallpaper for a Goan house is not a pattern, it is a match between paper, wall and room. Here is how to make that match before you fall for a sample book.
22PVC vs WPC Wall Panels: Which Suits Each Room of a Goan HomeBoth are plastic-based panels that shrug off the monsoon far better than plywood. The differences are in weight, heat, fire and finish, and they decide which room each belongs in.
23The Best Rugs for Humid Homes: Wool, Cotton, Jute or Synthetic? In a house that spends four months above 85 per cent humidity, the fibre of a rug matters more than its pattern. A plain comparison of what each one does when the air is wet.
24Wall-to-Wall Carpet in a Humid Climate: Should You Fit It?Fitted carpet is quiet, warm and soft underfoot. In a humid coastal house it is also the one floor covering you cannot lift to dry. Where it earns its place, and how to make it last.
25Silk Carpets: Real Silk, Art Silk and How to Tell Them ApartTwo rugs with the same sheen can be made of entirely different fibres, one from a silkworm and one from wood pulp. Here is how to tell them apart, and what each needs in a humid house.
26How to Measure for Curtains: Width, Drop and What a Workroom NeedsMeasure the track, not the glass. Decide where the curtain hangs from and where it stops before the tape comes out, and the numbers almost write themselves.
27How Much Fabric for Curtains? Fullness, Widths and Worked ExamplesCurtain fabric is counted in widths and cut lengths, not square metres. Here is the arithmetic our calculator uses, worked through for a French window and a balcony sliding door.
28Curtain Length Guide: Sill, Below-Sill, Floor, Break or PuddleWhere the hem stops changes how a window looks, how much fabric it takes and how the curtain survives a monsoon. In most Goan rooms the answer is just clear of the floor.
29How to Choose Curtains: A Step-by-Step Guide for Goan HomesStart with the job the window has to do, not with a fabric swatch. Six decisions, taken in order, lead to curtains that look right and still work after the monsoon.
30Types of Curtains: A Room-by-Room Guide for Goan HomesCurtains are sorted two ways: by what they do at the window, and by how they hang from it. Knowing both, and how a Goan room uses light and air, makes the choice for each room straightforward.
31Curtains vs Blinds: Which Is Right for Each Room?Curtains soften a room and clear the glass completely; blinds control light precisely and fit where fabric cannot. The right answer changes from room to room, and often it is both.
32Heat Blocking Curtains: What They Can and Cannot Do in a Goan HomeCurtains can take the edge off a hot room, but they work on heat that is already inside the glass. What the research actually shows, what a thermal label means, and where the real gains are.
33How to Choose Curtain Colour for a Room in Strong SunlightA curtain is the largest block of colour most rooms ever get, and in Goa it also hangs in some of the strongest light. A practical method for choosing it, testing it and making it last.
34White Curtains: Choosing the Right White, Weight and LiningWhite curtains are the most asked-for curtains we make and the easiest to get slightly wrong. Which white, how sheer, what goes behind it, and how to keep it looking white through a Goan year.
35Types of Mosquito Nets for Windows: Every Option ComparedSix ways to screen a window, and what each one is like to live with through a Goan year: the opening it suits, how it behaves in a monsoon gust, and what it takes to keep it working.
36Mosquito Mesh for Windows: Fibreglass, Polyester, Aluminium or Stainless Steel? The frame gets the attention, but the mesh does the work. What each material is, how it behaves in salt air and monsoon damp, what the numbers on a mesh mean, and the questions to ask before you buy.
37Magnetic Mosquito Net or a Fitted Screen? How They Compare in a Goan MonsoonA magnetic or velcro net goes up in an afternoon with no drilling. Whether it is still doing its job by August depends on the frame it is stuck to, the wind it faces and who uses the window.
38Retractable Mosquito Nets: How Roller Screens Work and Where They FitA screen that is there at dusk and gone by morning. How roller cassettes and pleated screens work, what wind, sand and salt do to them, and the windows and doors where they beat a sliding net.
39PVC Strip Curtains: Where They Work in Kitchens, Shops and Cold RoomsOverlapping plastic strips across a doorway hold cold air in, keep some dust and insects out and let trolleys through. An honest guide for Goan restaurants, bakeries and shops on where they belong and where something else works better.
40Grasscloth Wallpaper: The Texture, the Seams and the Risk in Damp RoomsWoven plant fibre on a paper back gives a wall a depth no print can copy. It also absorbs moisture, marks with water and cannot be scrubbed, which matters a great deal in a house that spends four months near saturation.
41Wooden Wallpaper vs Real Wood and WPC Panels: Choosing a Wood LookThree ways to put wood on a wall: a printed paper, a composite panel or the real thing. They differ in depth, in how they handle the monsoon and in how they are fitted, and each has a wall it suits best.
42Wallpaper Size Guide: Roll Sizes and How Many Rolls You NeedA standard roll holds about 5.3 square metres of paper, but dividing your wall area by that number nearly always leaves you short. Here is how roll sizes work, why paperhangers count in drops, and how to get the number right for a Goan room.
43PVC Marble Sheet vs Marble: Weight, Joints, Heat and LifespanA printed plastic sheet and a slab of metamorphic rock can look alike from the sofa. They part company on weight, heat, scratches and age, and those differences decide which one belongs on your wall.
44How to Choose a Sofa: A Buyer's Checklist for Humid HomesMeasure the way in, then work from the inside out: frame, suspension, cushions, fabric, legs and covers. The order matters more in Goa than almost anywhere, because the monsoon finds every shortcut.
45Sofa Reupholstery or a New Sofa? How to DecideThe frame decides it. A sound hardwood frame is worth rebuilding almost every time; a stapled board frame or one hollowed by termites rarely is. Here is how to tell which you have, and what each route involves.
46Reupholstery Fabric: How to Choose It and How Much to BuyUpholstery cloth is tested for strength, seam slippage and rubbing in ways curtain cloth is not. Choose it for the job, count the panels before the metres, and let the pattern repeat into the sum.
47Rug Size for a King Bed, a Queen and a SingleUnder a king bed, plan on 9 × 12 ft where the room allows and 8 × 10 ft where it does not. The bed's real width, the wardrobe doors and the walkway decide the rest.
