For your home
The room that gets the most light, the most guests and the most of the monsoon. What it needs from curtains, sofas and walls is different from a flat in Mumbai or Bengaluru.

Living Room in Goa
A Goan living room is rarely sealed. Doors stand open to a balcão or a garden for half the year, the afternoon sun comes in low and hard from the west, and from June to September the air holds so much moisture that fabric, timber and plaster all behave differently. A sitting room that looks right in October can smell of damp by August.
It is also the room where most of the household's life happens — family on the sofa through the monsoon, guests through the season, a television against one wall and a window you don't want to cover on another. Everything in it has to work in daylight, under lamps, and in the wet months, not just in a photograph.
We start every living room the same way: where the light comes from, how private the room needs to be from the road or the neighbours, what has to survive humidity, and what the room should feel like in the evening.

For most Goan living rooms, layer two curtains on one track: a sheer in linen or a linen-look polyester for the day, and a lined curtain for the evening.

Zebra blinds suit most Goan living rooms: they adjust light in bands without being raised, and they shrug off humidity.

Motorise the openings that are too tall, too wide or too heavy to draw by hand — typically the main glass wall of a villa living room.

Measure the room before choosing a shape: an L-shape suits a corner facing the television, a pair of three-seaters suits a room that opens onto a verandah.

For a Goan living room, PVC and WPC panels are the safest choices on external or monsoon-exposed walls; fluted and real-wood finishes suit dry internal walls.

Usually the window treatment. It decides how bright, how private and how hot the room feels, and it frames everything else. Sofas and walls are easier to choose once the light is under control.
