Tall windows, lime-plastered laterite, a balcão at the door and a roof of timber and clay tiles high above the salão. These houses ask for furnishings that frame their features, never hide them.

Goan & Portuguese House in Goa
An old Goan house — whether a grand Portuguese-era mansion in Chandor or Loutolim or a modest village home in Saligão or Benaulim — was built for this climate long before air-conditioning. High ceilings let the heat rise, tall windows and doors pull the sea breeze through, thick laterite walls hold the cool of the night, and the balcão gives the family a shaded place to sit at the threshold. You can read more about how they were built in our journal on Portuguese houses in Goa.
Furnishing one well means working with all of that, not against it. A heavy blackout curtain across a tall window with oyster-shell panes, or a modern blind screwed into a carved timber frame, can undo in an afternoon what the house has kept for a century. The aim is a home that is comfortable now — private at night, protected from mosquitoes, pleasant through the monsoon — while the windows, the timber and the lime-wash stay the stars.
We approach these houses slowly. We look at the windows and frames before measuring them, work out what can be fixed where without damaging old plaster or timber, and suggest treatments that could be removed one day without a trace.

For most Goan houses, choose natural, light fabrics — linen, cotton, a soft voile — hung high from the ceiling or a beam, full length, and wide enough to draw clear of the window and its shutters.

In a heritage house, use blinds sparingly and where they help: roman blinds in soft linen on bedroom and study windows, bamboo chik on the balcão and verandah, timber blinds where the house has dark wood throughout.

In a heritage house, either restore what is there or choose new sofas scaled to the room: a higher back and arms for a tall salão, timber legs rather than chrome, and natural fabrics in muted colours.

For an old Goan house, use slim framed or hinged nets in a dark mesh, fitted in the outer reveal, behind the grille, or as a hinged frame on the inside so the casement still opens.

FAQ
They shouldn't. We fix into sound masonry or the ceiling rather than into carved frames wherever possible, and choose treatments that can be removed without damage.
Yes. Restored and unrestored houses across Salcete, Bardez and Tiswadi. Our journal on restoring an old Portuguese house explains much of how we think about them.
Yes. Linen sheers, lined cotton, timber or chik blinds and well-made upholstery all sit comfortably in a Goan house while giving you privacy, darkness and comfort where you need them.
