Half room, half outdoors. A Goan balcony takes the full force of the sun in April and the full force of the rain in July, and whatever you put on it has to cope with both.

Balcony in Goa
Every other space on this site is a room with a roof and four walls. A balcony has, at best, a roof and one wall. Wind arrives from the sea most afternoons, the monsoon drives rain sideways under any overhang, and in the dry months the floor and railings can get too hot to touch by mid-afternoon. Fabric, frames and fittings that would last years indoors can fade, mildew or rust out here in a single year.
Yet in Goa the balcony is where people actually sit: morning tea in a flat in Porvorim, an evening drink overlooking paddy fields in Salcete, the place a homestay guest will photograph first. It is also the main route by which mosquitoes and the afternoon heat reach the rooms behind it, so what you do here changes how the bedroom or living room next to it feels.
We plan a balcony around exposure first — which way it faces, how deep the overhang is, how close the sea is — and only then around looks. The right answer for a covered, east-facing balcony in Margao is quite different from an open, west-facing one a few hundred metres from Candolim beach.

On a Goan balcony, use an outdoor fabric — solution-dyed acrylic or a coated outdoor canvas — rather than anything sold for indoors.

For most Goan balconies, choose either a bamboo chik for a natural, breezy shade or an outdoor screen blind in a mesh fabric that cuts sun and glare while letting air through.

For most balconies, net the door rather than the whole balcony: a sliding net on an aluminium frame for a sliding door, or a pleated net for a hinged or wide door.

For a Goan balcony, choose a compact sofa or bench with a frame that tolerates damp — powder-coated aluminium, treated hardwood or synthetic rattan — and cushions in outdoor fabric over quick-dry foam with removable covers.

FAQ
Only on a well-covered balcony, and even then they are best taken in for the monsoon. On an exposed balcony we recommend outdoor fabrics, chik or outdoor blinds that are made to get wet and dry out without mildew.
Usually a single outdoor or chik blind on the sun-facing side. Shading the open edge of the balcony does more for comfort than anything inside. We'll look at the exposure on the visit and quote the simplest option first.
Yes. Some societies limit what can be fixed to the outer face of a building. We check your rules with you and plan fixings into the ceiling slab or the inner wall wherever possible.
