The window seat and the bay

A bay window or window seat in a master bedroom is lovely in the morning and difficult to curtain — curtains either hang across the seat or need a track bent round the bay. Roman blinds, one per pane, are tidier. Each one raises independently, so you can shade the side the sun is on.

Use the same fabric as the main curtains, or a plain one in a matching colour, and line them to the level of darkness the room needs.

The en-suite bathroom

Bathrooms in Goa face daily steam plus monsoon humidity. Fabric blinds in a bathroom go spotty; real wood can warp. PVC and faux-wood venetian blinds tilt for privacy and ventilation and wipe clean. If the window is frosted, a simple light roller in a moisture-resistant fabric is enough.

If you love a light, unlined linen curtain but sleep badly in light, put a blackout roller in a pelmet or a ceiling recess behind it. It stays invisible during the day and drops at night. It is often neater than adding a heavy lining to a large curtain.
