Tilt the slats to bounce light off the ceiling and keep eyes out. Closed, near-total privacy; open, a striped view.
In short
For a window near the hob or the sink, choose a PVC, faux-wood or aluminium venetian blind: they tolerate steam, wipe clean and don't burn like loose fabric. For a kitchen window further from the cooking, a roller blind in a wipeable, moisture-resistant fabric is simpler and gives a cleaner look.
What your kitchen asks of blinds

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Slatted blinds — PVC, faux-wood or aluminium — are the workhorses of a busy kitchen. You can tilt them to angle daylight onto the counter while blocking the view in from the lane, and keep them partly open so steam and smells escape. Each slat is a hard surface that cleans with a cloth.
Roller blinds are simpler to look at and to clean in one sweep, but the fabric choice matters. A coated or PVC-backed roller fabric wipes down; a plain woven one will slowly absorb oil. Use rollers on windows over a sink or on a side wall rather than right beside the burners.
Natural timber slats look warm, but kitchen steam and Goan monsoon humidity together can bow them and lift the finish. Faux-wood gives the same colour and slat width in a material that doesn't mind the wet.
Roman blinds are lovely in a bedroom, but in a kitchen their soft folds collect grease and steam in every crease, and they have to come down to be cleaned. If you want the softness of fabric, put a roman blind on a dining-side window and keep the cooking wall hard-wearing.
Most kitchen windows sit behind a counter and a tap, so we usually fit blinds inside the window recess where they won't catch on a mixer spout or a dish rack. That needs a careful measurement of the recess depth, the handles on the window and any grille fixed in the opening — common in Goan homes.
Where the reveal is tiled, brackets go into the top of the recess or the frame with fixings suited to tile. Tell us about window grilles and handles before the visit so we can bring the right options.
Little and often works best. A weekly wipe with warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid stops oil building into a sticky layer; let the slats dry tilted open. Avoid harsh solvents on PVC and faux-wood, which can dull the finish.
Choose cords or wands placed on the side away from the hob. With children in the house, ask for a cord-free or child-safe control; a kitchen is already full of things small hands shouldn't reach.
In Goa
Near the coast, the metal parts of a blind matter as much as the slats. Aluminium headrails and stainless or coated brackets survive the mix of salt air and kitchen steam; plain steel components can rust and leave streaks down the window.
If the house is closed through the monsoon, leave PVC and aluminium blinds in place, raised and clean. Unlike curtains they don't need to come down — but wipe off any grease first, because a greasy film is what mould grows on in a sealed, humid kitchen.

FAQ
PVC, faux-wood and aluminium venetian blinds are the most practical near cooking — they tolerate steam and wipe clean. Coated roller blinds suit kitchen windows away from the hob.
Real wood is risky in a Goan kitchen because steam and monsoon humidity can warp it. Faux-wood gives the same look and is much more forgiving.
Wipe them weekly with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid, then leave the slats open to dry. Regular light cleaning is far easier than removing months of grease.
Usually, yes. Depending on the gap between glass and grille, we fit the blind inside the recess behind the grille or outside it on the wall. We check this when we measure.
Yes. A semi-open back kitchen or utility often suits a chik or outdoor-grade blind; an enclosed one takes the same PVC or aluminium blinds as the main kitchen.
