A blind is the low-maintenance answer for a room nobody looks after for months at a time — nothing to drag on the floor, little fabric to hold damp, and one simple movement for a guest to darken the room.

Time of day
Fabric that folds up in soft pleats — the look of a curtain in the footprint of a blind. Lined, it is fully private at night.
In short
For a guest room that's often shut, choose a roller or roman blind with a dim-out or blackout fabric, or faux-wood slats where the window takes rain. Pick a mechanism a visitor can work without being shown, raise the blinds when the room is closed so the window can breathe, and add a curtain only if the room needs softening.

Roman blinds feel the most like a furnished bedroom: the fabric folds softly when raised, and a lining gives darkness and protects the face fabric. Roller blinds are the most practical — very little to go wrong, easy to wipe, and available in blackout fabrics. Faux-wood slats suit guest rooms with a more tailored look, and the windows most exposed to monsoon rain.
In a guest room that's used rarely, the deciding question is how much fabric you are prepared to have sitting in a closed room for months. The less fabric, the less to care for.
Choose spring-assisted rollers, or a chain-operated blind with the chain fixed to the wall in a tidy loop. Avoid blinds that need a particular trick to lock or release. If the room has a high window, a motorised blind with a simple wall switch is easier for guests than a long pole.
A blind on its own can look a little bare in a bedroom. A pair of sheer or lightweight curtains dressed outside the frame softens the window without adding much fabric to care for. The blind does the darkening; the curtain makes the room feel welcoming.
Raise the blinds, open the window, and wipe the blind and the sill — a closed room collects fine dust and, near the coast, a film of salt. Check the blind runs smoothly; a roller that has sat in one position for months sometimes needs a couple of full runs before it moves freely.
In Goa
When the room is closed for the rains, leave blinds fully raised so air reaches the glass and the frame, and slatted blinds open rather than shut. A blind left lowered against a sweating window for weeks is where spotting and a musty smell begin.
Near the sea, ask for aluminium headrails and corrosion-resistant brackets. Salt in the air of a closed room settles on every metal surface.

FAQ
Blinds need less looking after in a room that's often closed. Many guest rooms use a blind for darkness with a light curtain for softness.
Polyester roller and roman fabrics, and faux-wood or PVC slats. Real wood and natural-fibre blinds need more care.
A blackout fabric, mounted outside the frame with a generous overlap, gets very close. Adding a lined curtain over it makes it darker still.
A spring-assisted roller or a chain-operated blind with the chain fixed to the wall.
