Matching the blind to the façade

Start with the compass, not the catalogue. A north-facing office in Goa rarely needs more than a light screen blind for privacy. East-facing floors get the morning sun, which is short and gentle. West and south-west windows are the problem: they take the hottest, lowest sun when the afternoon workload is heaviest, and that is where a denser screen fabric or a venetian earns its place.

Screen fabrics are described by their openness — how much of the weave is open. A more open fabric keeps the view and lets more light in; a tighter one cuts more glare and heat but makes the room dimmer. We bring samples to the site so you can see each one against your own windows at the time of day that matters.

Colour from the inside and the outside

The side of the blind facing the glass decides how much heat is reflected back out; light colours and metallic backings do this best. The side facing the room decides how comfortable it is to look at: a dark inner face reduces glare and makes the view through a screen fabric clearer. Many office fabrics are made in two-tone versions for exactly this reason.

For the façade, choose a neutral — white, grey, greige or charcoal — that sits with the building rather than the logo. Brand colours age quickly in Goan sun and look odd from the road.

Controls that survive an office

Long cords tangle and break on blinds that are pulled by a dozen people. A continuous chain with a tensioner, a spring-assisted cordless mechanism or a motor are all more robust. Glass partitions make a small office feel larger, but people in cabins still need privacy for calls and appraisals. Zebra or roller blinds fitted on the cabin side of the partition give privacy on demand. Frosted film is an alternative for the lower half, with a blind above for full privacy when the door closes.
