Avoid: Anything you cannot clean in place, on a piece used every day. Rub count is one number among several — weave, colour-fastness and how a fabric handles humidity matter as much. We bring samples to see in your room.
In short
Measure the room before choosing a shape: an L-shape suits a corner facing the television, a pair of three-seaters suits a room that opens onto a verandah. In Goa, pick a tightly woven performance fabric or solution-dyed acrylic over leather-look finishes, ask for higher-density foam, and keep the sofa off damp external walls.

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Mark the sofa's footprint on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. Leave a comfortable walking width between the sofa and the coffee table, and more along any route to a door. In long Goan sitting rooms a sofa floated in the room, with a console behind it, often works better than pushing everything against the walls.
Seat depth matters as much as length. Deep seats are good for lounging and for tall families; shallower, slightly higher seats suit older relatives who need to get up easily. A made-to-order sofa lets you choose both, and check the stairs, doorways and corners it must pass through on the way in.
Tightly woven polyester blends and solution-dyed acrylics resist fading, dry quickly and don't hold sand. Cotton and linen look lovely but crease, fade and absorb moisture; use them as loose covers you can wash. Velvet works in an air-conditioned room but holds humidity in an open one.
Leather and faux leather are tempting for easy wiping, but genuine leather can grow mould in a closed, humid house, and less expensive faux leather tends to crack and peel in heat. If you want the look, plan for air-conditioning and regular care.
A sofa's life depends on the frame and the foam. Ask what the frame is made of and how it's joined, and press the seat — it should spring back at once. Fibre wrapping over the foam gives a softer top without losing support.
Loose seat and back cushions are easier to turn, air and recover than fixed ones, which matters when the monsoon leaves the room damp for weeks. Legs that lift the sofa a few centimetres off the floor help too.
Mid-tones hide grit and wear better than pure whites or very dark colours, which show dust, pet hair and salt bloom. A textured weave also disguises marks. If you want strong colour, put it in cushions, which are easy to change when the season or the mood does.
Pull the sofa colour from something permanent in the room — the floor tiles, the window frames, the curtains — rather than a paint colour you may change next year.
In Goa
Keep sofas a hand's width from external walls, especially laterite walls that draw moisture in the rains, and choose a design on legs so air can pass underneath. Turn cushions regularly and stand them on end on dry days to air.
If the house is closed for months, cover the sofa with breathable cotton sheets, not plastic, which traps condensation and encourages mould. A dehumidifier or a weekly airing by a caretaker makes a real difference.
