If the guest room is a study, a television room or a place for the ironing most of the year, a sofa-cum-bed lets it keep that role and still sleep a guest when needed. If the room already has a bed, a sofa-cum-bed adds a second sleeping place for a child or an extra relative during a family wedding or the Christmas rush.

Be honest about how it will be used. For a guest who stays a night or two, a good sofa-cum-bed is fine. For parents who come for a month every winter, a proper bed is kinder, and a small two-seater gives them somewhere to sit.

Ask to see the mechanism opened and closed, then try it yourself, alone. It should move smoothly, lock securely and not need two people. Pull-out and fold-out designs suit different rooms; the right one depends on how much floor space there is in front of the sofa.

The mattress decides whether a guest sleeps. It should be thick enough to hide the frame and breathable enough not to trap moisture, because it may sit folded inside the sofa for months in humid air. Ask whether it can be taken out to air in the sun.

Tight-weave polyesters and solution-dyed acrylics resist fading and damp, and don't hold the musty smell a closed room can give soft furnishings. Removable covers mean the whole sofa can be washed and fresh before each visit. Velvet, chenille and leather are best avoided in a guest room that sits shut and humid for long stretches.

A mid-tone, quietly textured fabric looks right with any bedding a guest might use as a throw, and hides the dust a closed room collects.

Measure the room with the sofa-cum-bed fully opened, not closed. There should still be a path to the door, the wardrobe and the bathroom, and somewhere to open a suitcase. A guest shouldn't need to climb over the bed to reach their luggage at night.

Check where the open bed sits relative to the window and the air-conditioner too. Sleeping directly in a cold air stream, or with the head under a bright east window, makes for a poor night.
