On cool tiled and terracotta floors, a rug is what makes the seating area feel like a room — provided it's the right size and can handle sand, damp and sun.

In a sitting area, the front legs of every sofa and chair should rest on the rug, with a margin of bare floor around it. We confirm the size on site, against the real furniture.
In short
Size the rug so at least the front legs of every sofa and chair sit on it. In Goa, flat-woven cotton dhurries and wool-blend rugs suit most living rooms; synthetic modern rugs suit busy households. Roll and store natural rugs during a closed monsoon, and use a breathable underlay on tiles.
What your living room asks of rugs & carpets

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Arrange the sofa and chairs first, then size the rug so at least the front legs of each piece rest on it. That one rule pulls a seating group together. In a long Goan sitting room it usually means a bigger rug than people expect — a small rug floating in front of the sofa makes the whole arrangement look temporary.
Leave a margin of bare floor between the rug and the walls so the tiles or terracotta still show; that border is part of the look of a Goan room. If the room has two zones — sitting and dining, say — give each its own rug rather than stretching one across both.
Cotton dhurries and flatweaves are the easiest to live with: light, washable, quick to dry and happy to be rolled away. Wool is resilient and comfortable, and copes with humidity better than people expect, but it still needs airing in the monsoon. Good synthetic and blended rugs resist stains and fading, which suits families and rental homes.
Silk, viscose and very pale shaggy rugs look beautiful in a showroom. In a living room that opens to a garden or the beach, they mark with water, trap grit and are hard to clean — keep them for a sealed, air-conditioned room if you love them.
Patterned and mid-tone rugs hide sand and wear far better than plain pale ones. Take colours from the sofa, the curtains or the floor itself; on red oxide or terracotta floors, indigo, rust and ochre sit naturally, while on pale marble or vitrified tiles a tonal rug keeps the room calm.
Think about pile height with the doors. A thick rug near a door that swings inward will catch; a flatweave won't.
Polished tiles and stone are slippery, and a rug that slides is a hazard for children and older relatives. A thin rubberised or felt underlay holds the rug in place, protects the floor and lets air pass under the backing. Avoid solid plastic sheeting, which traps condensation against the floor in humid weather.
In Goa
Ground floors in Goa can sweat on humid days in July and August. Lift natural rugs every week or two in the wet months so the floor and the backing can dry, and keep a dehumidifier running if the room is closed.
If the house will be shut for the season, have rugs cleaned, fully dried and stored rolled — never folded — off the floor, in a dry room, with something to keep insects away. They come back out in October looking as they did.
