Blinds take less space, need less washing and are harder for guests to damage than curtains — if you choose the right mechanism and fabric for each room.

Treatment
Time of day
Light-filtering roller fabric: soft, even light and daytime privacy. For a bedroom, choose blackout fabric and side channels.
In short
Use blackout roller blinds behind curtains in guest bedrooms (or alone in small rooms), faux-wood or PVC blinds in bathrooms, zebra blinds in common areas, and chik or bamboo blinds on verandahs. Choose chain-operated mechanisms with child-safety fittings, and fabrics you can wipe clean.
What your homestay asks of blinds

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
The most reliable way to make a guest room dark is a blackout roller in the window recess with a curtain in front. Light that leaks around the blind is caught by the curtain; light that leaks around the curtain is stopped by the blind.
In small rooms where a curtain would crowd the bed or wardrobe, a well-fitted blackout roller on its own does the job.
Guest bathrooms stay steamy and are cleaned daily. PVC or faux-wood blinds don't absorb water and wipe down with the rest of the bathroom. In kitchenettes, a roller in a wipeable fabric is the practical choice.
Where a bathroom window faces a neighbour or a shared path, tilt the slats upward: guests get daylight and air, and nobody outside can see in. It's worth explaining in the house notes, because many guests close the blind fully and then complain the bathroom is dark.
Choose chain-operated blinds with a clutch mechanism and fix the chain with a tensioner. Avoid cord-lock Roman blinds in guest rooms — they are easily jammed or broken. Fix brackets into solid masonry, not soft plaster.
Keep the mechanism the same in every room. A guest who has worked out one blind can work them all, and your housekeeping team only has to know one way to fix a jam.
Guests come to Goa for the verandah breakfast and the sundowner on the balcão. Chik and bamboo blinds give shade and a gentle breeze, and they look like Goa in every photograph. Roll them up in heavy rain and they'll last several seasons.
For a sit-out that takes side rain, an outdoor roller blind on guides keeps the furniture dry and the space usable through the shoulder months either side of the monsoon.
The least expensive blinds are rarely the best value in a rental. Thin fabrics let light through and spring mechanisms fail; replacing them mid-season costs more than a sturdier blind would have. Put your spend into guest-bedroom blackout and bathroom blinds, and keep common-area blinds simple.
In Goa
Raise blinds before closing the homestay for the monsoon so fabric isn't held against damp glass. Wipe them down and check mechanisms before the first guests arrive.
Bamboo and chik blinds should be rolled up and kept dry; they spot and smell if left down in the rain. Near the coast, check brackets and chains for rust during the pre-season walk-round — a rust mark on a white blind is the first thing a guest notices.

FAQ
In bathrooms, kitchenettes and small rooms, often yes. In guest bedrooms, a blackout blind behind a curtain gives the best darkness.
Chain-operated blinds with tensioners or cleats, or motorised blinds. Avoid loose cords.
PVC and coated fabrics wipe clean with a damp cloth. Roller blinds can be vacuumed with a soft brush.
Some can, but for guest use we recommend fixing into masonry for strength.
