Light-filtering roller fabric: soft, even light and daytime privacy. For a bedroom, choose blackout fabric and side channels.
In short
Fit sunscreen roller blinds — a fabric with a fine, open weave — to the west and sea-facing glass. They block much of the heat and glare and you can still see out. Use blackout rollers in bedrooms, side channels where wind makes blinds rattle, and outdoor blinds on the terrace.
What your penthouse asks of blinds

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Sunscreen fabrics are woven with tiny openings. The tighter the weave, the more heat and glare they stop; the more open, the better the view. A darker colour facing the room gives a clearer view out, because your eye isn't distracted by bright fabric.
For west-facing glass on the coast, choose a tighter weave; for north-facing or shaded glass, a more open one. Most penthouses end up with two weaves: a denser one on the sea side, a lighter one on the land side.
At night the effect reverses. With lights on inside, a sunscreen blind becomes see-through from outside, so it is a daytime layer only — bedrooms and anything overlooked still need a curtain or a blackout blind for the evening.
In a penthouse, the most effective set-up is a sunscreen roller in a recess next to the glass and a sheer or lined curtain in front. The blind controls the heat and glare; the curtain adds softness and privacy at night.
Because the blind is doing the hard work, the curtain fabric in front of it is protected from the worst of the sun and lasts far longer. Many owners find they can choose a richer curtain colour once a sunscreen blind is taking the afternoon.
On doors that are often open, use side channels or tensioned cables so the blind can't swing or rattle. A weighted bottom bar also helps on windows that catch drafts.
Venetian and vertical blinds clatter in a sea breeze and collect salt and sand on every slat. On a high, exposed floor, a roller in a guide is quieter and far easier to keep clean.
Outdoor blinds hung at the edge of a covered terrace turn a space that is unbearable at four o'clock into the best room in the apartment. Choose tensioned guides or cable systems rated for wind, and roll them up before a monsoon storm rather than leaving them to take a gale.
Top-floor apartments sometimes have skylights or a glazed roof over the stair. Overhead glass lets in more heat than any window; a tensioned skylight blind, usually motorised, keeps the stairwell from becoming an oven.
In Goa
Salt settles on blind fabric and in the roller mechanism. Wipe or vacuum blinds after the monsoon, and choose aluminium or coated brackets and stainless fixings.
In the rains, roll blinds up when the glass is streaming with condensation so the fabric doesn't stay damp. A blind rolled up wet and left for days in a closed apartment is how spotting starts on the inner layers of the roll.
