Start with the plan, not a catalogue. Mark where the seating group sits, how far it is from the fireplace, television or view, and how people move through the room. Then size the sofa to the zone: in a large room, a long sofa with deeper seats and a lower back often looks better than a tall one.

The scatter cushions are where a luxury scheme ties together. Pick up one colour from the curtains, one texture from the rug, and keep the rest of the palette quiet. Feather-filled cushions with zipped covers can be washed or swapped for the season.
