Short, washable curtains that soften a kitchen window without going anywhere near the flame — and come out of the machine looking new after a season of frying and steaming.

Time of day
Glows with daylight and gives real daytime privacy. After dark, silhouettes can still show through unlined linen.
In short
Use curtains only on kitchen windows that are well away from the hob, keep them short (sill length or a café half-curtain), and choose cotton or a cotton-polyester blend that machine-washes. Hang them on a simple rod or a tension rod so they come down in a minute for washing.
What your kitchen asks of curtains
See it in your kitchen
We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Walk the kitchen and look at each window from the hob. The one directly behind or beside the cooking zone should not carry loose fabric — wind through an open sash can lift a curtain across a burner in a second, and even when it doesn't, that curtain will be the first thing to turn yellow with oil.
Windows over the sink, on a far wall, in a breakfast corner or in the back wash area are where curtains make sense. They add warmth to a hard room, hide the washing-up from the lane, and take the edge off the glare without blocking the air.
A café curtain is a single short panel hung from a rod halfway up the window, covering only the lower glass. It is the classic answer for a kitchen: privacy at counter height, full light and air from the top. A tier pairs it with a short valance across the top for a softer finish.
Sill-length curtains — ending just at or a few centimetres below the window ledge — suit a window above a counter, where floor-length fabric would drape onto the worktop and into the sink. Keep them light; a kitchen curtain should never be the heaviest thing in the room.
Cotton and cotton-polyester blends are the most practical. They machine-wash, iron easily if you want them crisp, and take a print well. Pure linen looks lovely but creases and can shrink if it hasn't been pre-washed — fine for a dining-side window, less so above the sink.
Avoid velvet, chenille, heavily textured weaves and anything labelled dry-clean only. They trap oil and cooking smells, and a kitchen curtain you're nervous to wash is one that stays up until it looks tired. If you want a lining for privacy, use a light cotton lining sewn in so the curtain still goes in the machine as one piece.
Washability depends as much on the fixing as on the fabric. A rod-pocket or tab-top café curtain on a slim rod lifts off its brackets in seconds. Eyelets work on a short rod too. Avoid hooks and tracks with many small gliders in a kitchen: they gather grease and make taking the curtain down a chore.
Inside a window recess, a tension rod needs no drilling — useful on tiled reveals where you don't want holes. Outside the recess, fix brackets into the wall rather than the window frame, so the rod doesn't loosen as aluminium or uPVC frames expand in the heat.
In Goa
In July and August a Goan kitchen hardly dries out: rice steam, damp air through the open back door and condensation on the glass every morning. A curtain resting against wet glass will spot with mildew within weeks. Hang café curtains a finger's width off the pane, keep the window open when you can, and wash them more often in the rains than in the dry months.
Within a few kilometres of the sea, steam and salt together attack plain steel rods quickly. Ask for aluminium or stainless rods and brackets — the rust line they prevent is almost impossible to wash out of a pale cotton.

FAQ
Cotton or a cotton-polyester blend. Both machine-wash, dry quickly and hold a print well. Avoid heavy weaves and dry-clean-only fabrics, which trap grease and cooking smells.
Usually sill length for a window above a counter, or a café curtain covering only the lower half. Floor-length curtains suit a kitchen only on a window or door away from the cooking and washing areas.
No. Keep loose fabric away from the hob and from any window where the breeze could carry it towards a flame. Use a wipeable blind or leave that window bare.
Every few weeks in a kitchen where you fry and roast regularly, and more often in the monsoon when steam and damp make marks set faster.
Yes. Everything we make is made to measure, so a single café curtain is as easy as a whole house. We can measure it on the same visit as your other rooms.
