Kitchen · Mosquito Nets
Keep the kitchen window and the back door open for air while the flies, mosquitoes and the neighbour's cat stay outside.

The opening
What matters most
Setting
System
Pleated screen, side-opening
Mesh
Coated fibreglass or polyester mesh
Frame
Powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings
Pleated mesh folds into a slim stack, so a wide opening needs no heavy panel and no bottom lip to trip on. Near the sea, plain steel screws and untreated mesh corrode within a season or two. Rinse mesh and track with fresh water after the monsoon.
In short
Fit sliding nets on kitchen windows so you can open them to reach the latch or clean the glass, and a pleated or sliding net on the door to the yard or wash area — one that opens with a nudge when your hands are full. Choose aluminium frames and a mesh that wipes clean of grease.
What your kitchen asks of mosquito nets

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Kitchen windows are awkward to screen: there is a counter and often a tap between you and the glass, the window may open outwards, and there is usually a grille. A fixed net would trap you — you couldn't reach the latch or clean the pane. A sliding net in its own aluminium channel solves this; you slide it aside, open or close the window, and slide it back.
We measure each kitchen window for the frame type, which way the sashes open, the grille and the depth available. Old Goan houses often have wooden frames and uneven reveals, which the net frame has to be packed and squared to — gaps of even a few millimetres are where mosquitoes get in.
In many Goan homes the kitchen door to the yard is the most-used opening in the house: out to the well, the bins, the drying line, the chickens or the garden tap. It is also the opening most often left wide open, because closing a door every time you step out is a nuisance.
A pleated net is the usual answer. It folds into a slim side frame, opens with a light push, and its threshold is low enough not to catch a foot or a bucket. Where the doorway is uneven or very wide, a sliding mesh door or a hinged screen door may suit better — we look at the opening before recommending one.
A net next to the hob picks up oil like a filter, and greasy mesh blocks air and holds dust. Choose a fibreglass or polyester mesh that can be wiped with soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid fitting a net directly in the path of the exhaust fan, which blows grease straight into it.
Every few months, slide or fold the nets open and brush both sides, then rinse with a damp cloth. Check the brushes and seals along the edges — they wear first, and a worn seal is the gap mosquitoes find.
Screening the windows does not stop a kitchen from needing extraction. If the room has an exhaust fan in a wall opening, that opening needs its own mesh or cowl, otherwise insects simply use it instead. A chimney hood that ducts outside should have a back-draught flap at the wall.
With nets on, the kitchen draws air through the mesh rather than an open window, so a fan or chimney works a little harder. Keeping the mesh clean keeps that airflow up.
In Goa
The first rains bring a burst of insects — termite swarms around the lights, mosquitoes breeding in every pot and gutter, frogs on the back step. A screened kitchen door in June makes more difference to an evening at home than almost anything else you can fit.
Near the sea, frames should be aluminium with stainless fittings; plain steel catches and screws corrode in the salt air and the steam. If your current nets have rusted rollers or brittle mesh after a few monsoons, re-meshing on the existing frames is often possible.

FAQ
A sliding net in its own aluminium frame. It lets you open the window, reach the latch and clean the glass, which a fixed net does not.
Usually a pleated net, because it opens and closes easily with your hands full and has a low threshold. A hinged or sliding mesh door suits some wider or uneven openings.
A little, but far less than closing the window. Keep the mesh clean of grease and dust to keep the air moving.
Open it fully, brush off dust with a soft brush, then wipe both sides with warm soapy water. Do this every few months, more often on the window nearest the hob.
Yes. We pack and square the frame to the opening so there are no gaps, which matters more on uneven old frames than on new aluminium windows.
