A rug under the table warms a tiled floor and quietens the room — if it's big enough for the chairs and tough enough for dinner.

In a sitting area, the front legs of every sofa and chair should rest on the rug, with a margin of bare floor around it. We confirm the size on site, against the real furniture.
In short
Size the rug so every chair stays on it when pulled out: roughly 60 cm beyond the table edge on every side. Choose a flat or low, tight weave — a dhurrie, flatweave or short-pile wool — in a mid-tone or pattern that hides crumbs and stains, and avoid deep shag under a dining table.
What your dining room asks of rugs & carpets

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Measure the table, then add about 60 cm on every side — that's the depth a chair needs to be pulled out and sat on while staying on the rug. A table of 180 × 90 cm therefore wants a rug around 300 × 210 cm. For a round table, use a round or square rug with the same allowance all round.
If the table extends for festive meals, size for the extended table or accept that the extra chairs at Christmas will sit partly off the rug. If the room can't take a rug of the right size, it's often better to go without than to use one that is too small.
Flat weaves and low, dense piles are right under a table. They let chairs slide, don't trap crumbs deeply and recover from chair legs. Shaggy and high-pile rugs, however soft, catch chair legs and hold food — keep them for the hall or bedroom.
Rugs with a pattern, a border or a heathered colour are far more forgiving than a single pale shade. A cream rug under a dining table in a family home is a beautiful idea for about a week.
Blot, don't rub, and work from the edge of a spill inward. Turmeric and oil-based gravies are the hardest stains: lift the solids, blot with cold water, and have a wool rug professionally cleaned rather than scrubbing it. Cotton dhurries can often be washed whole, which makes them the low-stress choice for families with small children.
Felt pads on chair legs and a good underlay both protect the rug from the daily drag of chairs and stop it creeping across a smooth tiled floor.
Match the rug shape to the table: rectangular under rectangular, round under round. Centre it under the table, not the room, and line it up with the pendant overhead. In an open hall, keep at least a hand's width between the dining rug and the living-room rug so the two zones stay distinct.
In Goa
Goan homes mostly have tiled, mosaic or stone floors that stay cool and can be damp underneath a rug in the monsoon. Lift the edges and air the rug on dry days, use a breathable underlay, and don't put a rug down on a freshly mopped floor. Wool and cotton dry better than thick synthetic backings, which can hold a musty smell.
If the house is closed for months, roll the rug, clean it first so food residue doesn't attract insects, and store it off the floor in a dry room — we can take it down and store it for you.

FAQ
About 60 cm larger than the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Size for the extended table if you extend it often.
A cotton dhurrie or flatweave for easy washing, or a short-pile wool for warmth and natural stain resistance. Avoid high pile under a table.
Yes, if it's flat, patterned and washable. A cotton dhurrie can be cleaned whole, and a pattern hides daily marks.
It can in the monsoon. Use a breathable underlay, lift and air the rug on dry days, and store it if the house is closed.
