On a hard tiled floor, a rug is where children actually play — building, reading, rolling around — so it needs to be soft enough to sit on, firm enough not to slide, and easy to wash when the juice goes over.

In a sitting area, the front legs of every sofa and chair should rest on the rug, with a margin of bare floor around it. We confirm the size on site, against the real furniture.
In short
For most kids' rooms in Goa, a cotton dhurrie or a low-pile synthetic rug on a non-slip underlay is the right answer: washable, quick to dry, and safe on polished tiles. Avoid deep shaggy rugs, which trap crumbs and stay damp in the monsoon, and size the rug to the play area rather than the whole room.
What your child's room asks of rugs & carpets

We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Put the rug where the child plays and reads, not under the bed. A rug beside the bed is nice on cold mornings, but the main rug belongs in the open floor space — often between the bed and the cupboard, or in the play corner.
Keep rugs away from doors that swing inward, so the door doesn't catch on the pile, and away from the bathroom door, where wet feet bring water onto it.
Cotton dhurries are the most practical: they wash, dry quickly, and are light enough to shake out. Synthetic low-pile rugs resist stains and fading and are easy to vacuum. Wool is comfortable and resilient, but heavier to clean and needs airing in the monsoon.
Avoid long shaggy piles in a young child's room — crumbs, small toys and sand disappear into them, and they dry slowly.
A patterned or mid-tone rug hides spills and wear; plain pale rugs show everything. Play rugs printed with roads or hopscotch are fun for a few years; a colourful geometric or a striped dhurrie lasts into the teenage years.
If the room has a strong wallpaper or printed curtains, let the rug be the quieter partner — one or two colours picked out of the pattern rather than a third competing design.
A good non-slip underlay holds the rug in place, adds a little cushioning for knees and elbows, and lets air pass under the backing. Cut it a few centimetres smaller than the rug so the edges lie flat and don't curl into a trip hazard. Avoid solid plastic or rubber sheets that trap damp on tiled floors.
Runners in a corridor outside a child's room need the same grip — that is where running children turn corners at speed.
In Goa
Children's rooms are often closed and air-conditioned at night and shut during the day. In the monsoon, lift the rug every week or two so the floor can dry, and wash cotton dhurries on a sunny day so they dry quickly.
If the family is away for the rains, have the rug cleaned, dried in the sun and stored rolled in a dry room, off the floor. A rug left down in a shut, humid room comes back smelling musty, and children notice smells more than anyone.

FAQ
A washable cotton dhurrie or a low-pile synthetic rug on a non-slip underlay suits most children's rooms in Goa.
Not for young children. They trap crumbs, sand and small toys and take a long time to dry in the monsoon.
Use a breathable non-slip underlay cut slightly smaller than the rug, so the edges lie flat and the rug stays put when children run across it.
Shake or vacuum it weekly and wash a cotton dhurrie whenever it needs it — ideally on a sunny day so it dries quickly. Synthetic rugs can be spot-cleaned between deeper cleans.
