Goan & Portuguese House · Curtains
In a house where the windows are the architecture, a curtain's job is to frame them by day and close them gently at night — never to compete with them.

Time of day
Glows with daylight and gives real daytime privacy. After dark, silhouettes can still show through unlined linen.
In short
For most Goan houses, choose natural, light fabrics — linen, cotton, a soft voile — hung high from the ceiling or a beam, full length, and wide enough to draw clear of the window and its shutters. Leave oyster-shell panes and fanlights uncovered by day. Use a lining only in bedrooms, and fix into sound masonry rather than old timber frames.
What your Goan house asks of curtains
See it in your Goan house
We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
The best curtain in a Goan house is often the one you barely notice by day: drawn back to the wall, clear of the window, letting the shutters, the frame and the oyster-shell panes do the talking. Our journal on oyster-shell windows explains why those panes deserve the light.
At night, the same curtain closes for privacy. That means a generous track or rod, wider than the window, so that when open the curtains sit on the wall and when closed they cover the whole opening.
Lime plaster over laterite crumbles under a careless drill, and carved timber frames should not be screwed into at all. We prefer to fix into the ceiling, a timber beam, or the solid masonry above the reveal. Where a house is being restored, we can coordinate with the restorer so fixings go in at the right stage.
Lime-wash in white, ochre, indigo or Goan pink glows in daylight. Natural linen, cotton and soft voile in ivory, oat, sand or a muted colour picked from the floor tiles sit well against it. Strong synthetics and shiny fabrics look out of place.
If the house has coloured window frames — the classic white, green or blue — let the curtain be quieter than the frame.
A slim wrought-iron or turned timber rod with rings suits the period. In very high rooms, or for wide openings, a discreet ceiling track can be used instead, hidden by the curtain heading. Avoid bulky modern fittings that draw the eye away from the window.
In Goa
Old Goan houses breathe, and in the monsoon they breathe in a great deal of damp. Keep curtains clear of the floor and the walls, open the house on dry days, and choose natural fabrics that dry quickly. If the house is closed for the rains, have the curtains taken down and stored dry.
Where windows are near the sea, use stainless or coated fittings so rust doesn't stain the fabric or the timber.

FAQ
Light, natural fabrics — linen, cotton, voile — hung high and full length, wide enough to clear the window and shutters. Lining only where you need privacy or darkness.
Not by day. Let the panes take the light, and draw a sheer or lined curtain across only when you need privacy at night.
Into the ceiling, a beam or solid masonry above the window, never into carved timber frames. We plan fixings so they could be removed later.
A slim iron or timber rod with rings suits the period. In very tall rooms, a discreet ceiling track hidden behind the heading also works.
