Not every classroom does. Rooms with a projector or smart board, rooms used for exams in hot afternoon sun, music rooms, libraries and the main hall get the most benefit. Ordinary classrooms on a shaded side of the building often manage with blinds, or with nothing at all beyond the shutters.

Starting with a list of rooms and their use lets the school put its money where teachers feel the difference — usually AV rooms first, then the sunniest classrooms.

A medium-to-heavy polyester or poly-cotton holds up far better than a light sheer. Ask for double-turned hems and stitched headings rather than glued ones, and for the bottom hem to be weighted so curtains hang straight in a breeze from a fan.

For halls and auditoriums, specify fire-retardant fabric. Your management or the fire inspection will usually set the requirement, and we source to it and pass on the supplier's documentation rather than assuming a fabric qualifies.

Children pull curtains. Brackets need to go into concrete or solid brick with proper anchors, not into plaster alone, and runners should be strong enough to tolerate a hard tug without leaving the track. Avoid tie-back cords and loose pull cords in primary classrooms.

Where curtains hang in front of windows that open outwards or have grilles, leave clearance so fabric doesn't get caught in the latches or blow out into the rain.

A fully blacked-out classroom gets hot and stuffy fast if the windows have to close for it. Where possible, put blackout only on the windows that throw light on the screen, and leave the others free to open. Ceiling fans and open fanlights above the curtain line help too.
