Bungalow · Mosquito Nets
A bungalow sits in its own garden, often beside paddy, a nullah or a grove of coconut palms. That is the pleasure of it — and the reason it sees far more mosquitoes than an upper-floor flat.

The opening
What matters most
Setting
System
Pleated screen, side-opening
Mesh
Coated fibreglass or polyester mesh
Frame
Powder-coated aluminium, stainless fixings
Pleated mesh folds into a slim stack, so a wide opening needs no heavy panel and no bottom lip to trip on. Near the sea, plain steel screws and untreated mesh corrode within a season or two. Rinse mesh and track with fresh water after the monsoon.
In short
Net every ground-floor window and door, and the bedrooms upstairs. Use sliding nets on aluminium windows, framed or hinged nets on older timber casements, hinged or pleated net doors on the garden doors, and enclose the verandah with framed mesh if the family sits out after dark. Make each net to the real opening, not a standard size.
What your bungalow asks of mosquito nets
See it in your bungalow
We bring samples to your home, hold them to your light and measure every opening — anywhere in North or South Goa.
Before choosing a single net, list every opening on both floors: what kind of frame it has, which way it opens, and what's outside it. The garden-facing ones and those near drains or dense planting come first. Bathrooms, the kitchen and the store room are easy to forget and often let in the most.
This list becomes the quote. It also shows where one type of net can be used throughout — which makes the house look consistent and makes future repairs simpler.
Many Goan bungalows built from the 1960s to the 1990s have timber windows that open inward, with an iron grille outside. A sliding net doesn't suit them. The usual answers are a fixed framed net fitted to the grille or the outer reveal, or a hinged net frame on the inside that swings open when you need to reach the casement.
Older frames are rarely square. A net made to the nominal size will gap at one corner. We measure each opening at several points and make the frame to fit.
These are the doors everyone walks through, often with their hands full. A hinged net door with a self-closing hinge and a magnetic catch shuts itself behind you. For a wide opening onto a lawn or pool, a pleated net that folds to the side is easier than two swinging leaves. Keep the threshold low; a raised track is a trip hazard for older family members.
Enclosing the verandah with framed mesh panels between the pillars, plus a net door to the garden steps, turns it into a room you can sit in at dusk. Use a dark mesh, which almost disappears against the garden view, and plan the panels so they can be removed for cleaning. On a heritage-style verandah, keep the frames slim so the pillars and railings still read.
In Goa
Bungalows beside paddy, rivers, nullahs or dense gardens see mosquito numbers rise sharply once the rains settle in June, and stay high well into October. Nets help most when combined with clearing standing water around the house — coconut shells, plant saucers, blocked gutters and the corners of a verandah floor.
Within a few kilometres of the sea, choose aluminium frames and stainless or nylon fittings, and rinse the tracks once the monsoon is over.
