Sofas
Seating for the balcao, the verandah, the terrace and the pool deck, built so that a monsoon squall, a salty breeze or an afternoon of west sun does not ruin it. Outdoor sofas are made differently from indoor ones at every layer.

In short
By the Drape Haus studio · How we write
Is it right for you?
Much of Goan life happens half outside. The balcao at the front of an old house, the verandah that wraps a bungalow, the balcony of a sea-facing flat and the deck beside a villa pool are all places people sit every evening. Each is a little different, and the first question is how exposed the seat really is.
A sofa on a deep verandah, well back from the edge, sees humid air and the odd gust of rain but rarely a soaking. A sofa on an open balcony or a pool deck gets direct sun for hours, salt on the wind and, in the monsoon, rain driven sideways under any roof. Indoor sofas in either position grow mould, fade and rust from the inside within one season.
A true outdoor sofa is the right choice wherever rain or full sun can reach the seat. Under a generous roof, a well-chosen indoor-style sofa with outdoor fabric can work and feels softer. We help you judge which you have, because buying more weather resistance than you need costs comfort, and buying less costs the sofa.
The details
An outdoor sofa starts with where it will stand. A deep covered verandah, an open balcony facing the sea and a poolside deck in full sun each ask for a different frame, cushion and fabric, so we look at the exposure before suggesting anything.
Frames are chosen not to rust or rot: powder-coated aluminium, marine-grade stainless steel, synthetic weave over a metal core, or naturally durable hardwood under a roof. Ordinary mild steel and untreated softwood do not survive salt air for long.
Cushions use quick-dry foam with an open structure that lets rainwater drain straight through, wrapped in solution-dyed outdoor fabric whose colour runs through the fibre. Breathable mesh panels on the underside let them dry after rain instead of holding water.
On narrow apartment balconies we scale the sofa to the space: a slim two-seater or a built-in bench with storage beneath, so there is still room to open the door and stand at the rail.
Your options
The frame is the part that has to stand outside all year, so it decides how long the sofa lasts. The form decides how well it fits the space and how you will use it.

The honest view
Sits out in the weather
Rust-free frames and fast-draining cushions mean an outdoor sofa can stay in place through sun and showers, ready to use when the rain stops.
Holds its colour
Solution-dyed fabric keeps its colour on a west-facing balcony where piece-dyed indoor cloth would bleach within months.
Resists mould
Outdoor fibres do not feed mould the way cotton and linen do, and open-cell foam dries before spores can take hold.
Extends the house
A comfortable outdoor sofa turns a balcony or verandah into a room that is used every day, not just a passage.
Less soft than indoor
Quick-dry foam is springier and outdoor fabric slightly coarser than indoor upholstery. Thick cushions and a soft-handle weave close the gap.
Cushions still need storing
Even the best cushions last longer if they are brought in during the heaviest monsoon weeks, so you need a dry place to keep them.
Salt still settles
No frame is maintenance-free near the sea. Salt deposits need rinsing off, or they dull coatings and stain fixings.
Space on balconies
Outdoor sofas tend to be deep. On a narrow balcony a full sofa can block the door or the view, so scale matters.
Side by side
For a balcony or verandah, the real choices are a dedicated outdoor sofa, an indoor sofa moved outside, or a wooden or cane settee under the roof. This is how they compare through a Goan year.
| Outdoor sofa | Indoor sofa outside | Wooden or cane settee | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driven monsoon rain | Drains and dries | Soaks and grows mould | Wood swells, cane rots |
| Afternoon sun | Colour holds | Fades quickly | Finish dries and cracks |
| Salt air | Rust-free frame | Hidden staples rust | Fine if hardwood |
| Comfort | Good | Best, briefly | Firm |
| Care through the year | Rinse, store cushions | Constant battle | Oil and re-seal |
| Lifespan outside | Many seasons | One season or less | Long under cover only |

An indoor sofa on a covered verandah can work if it is re-covered in outdoor fabric and set well back from the edge, but its hidden frame and foam remain indoor materials.

We bring samples to the house, measure every window, and specify for the light and exposure you actually have.
Room by room
The most comfortable outdoor setting: shade, breeze and protection from direct rain. Almost any outdoor frame works, and softer cushions are possible.
Aluminium or synthetic weave frames with solution-dyed fabric handle salt and sun. Scale the depth to leave a walkway.
Full sun and wet swimwear call for the fastest-draining cushions and a frame that does not get too hot to touch. Pale fabrics stay cooler.
The built-in masonry seats of a balcao take made-to-measure outdoor cushions well, keeping the original structure untouched.
Exposed to wind and the strongest sun. Choose heavy, low frames that will not shift in a squall, and plan cushion storage close by.
Outdoor sofas can be used indoors, but they feel firmer and look more casual. Indoor upholstery is usually a better choice inside.
In depth — tap a heading to read
Stand where the sofa will go at about four in the afternoon, when the west sun is strongest on most Goan coastal balconies, and again on a windy monsoon day if you can. Note whether the sun reaches the seat, how far in the rain blows, and whether you can taste salt on the air.
A roof overhang of less than the sofa's own depth will not keep driven rain off the cushions. Glass balustrades block the wind but focus the sun; solid parapets do the reverse. Upper-floor balconies catch more wind than ground-floor verandahs.
These observations decide the specification. Full exposure needs an aluminium or stainless frame and the fastest-draining cushions. Partial exposure allows synthetic weave and softer foam. Deep cover allows hardwood and fabrics with a softer hand.
Plan for the worst week of the monsoon, not the pleasant evening when you are choosing.
Ordinary upholstery foam is a sponge. Once rain gets in, it holds water for days and starts to smell. Outdoor cushions use an open, reticulated foam whose cells are connected, so water runs straight through and air follows it. Pressed down, it feels slightly springier than indoor foam.
The cover is made with a breathable mesh panel underneath, so water drains out of the base rather than pooling inside. Seams are stitched with UV-resistant thread, which matters because ordinary thread rots in the sun long before the fabric does, and zips are plastic or coated so they do not seize with salt.
For extra softness, a thin fibre wrap can go over the foam core. On a verandah under good cover this makes the sofa almost as comfortable as indoor seating; on an exposed deck we keep the build simpler so it dries faster.
The single most important feature is how the fabric is coloured. Solution-dyed fabrics have the pigment added before the fibre is spun, so colour runs right through and sun cannot bleach it. Printed or piece-dyed fabrics carry colour on the surface and fade fast on a sunny balcony.
After colour, look at water and mould resistance. Good outdoor fabrics shed light rain, dry quickly and are treated to resist mildew. They are made in plains, textures and stripes, and the better ones now feel close to indoor weaves.
Colour choice affects comfort as well as looks. Dark fabrics in full sun get hot enough to be uncomfortable, while pale ones show red laterite dust and sunscreen marks. Mid-tones and textured weaves are usually the practical choice. The sofa fabric simulator is a useful way to see colours on a sofa before you look at samples on site.
The frame can stay outside through the wet season if it is aluminium, stainless steel or synthetic weave. Turn it so the seat faces away from the prevailing wind, or push it against the house wall where the overhang is deepest.
Cushions last longer if they come in during the heaviest weeks. Store them standing on edge in a dry, airy room, not sealed in plastic, where trapped humidity breeds mould. A built-in bench with storage beneath, or a ventilated deck box, keeps them close at hand for dry spells.
If you are away for the monsoon, as many second-home owners are, ask whoever looks after the house to bring the cushions in and check the frame for standing water. Fitted covers for the frame are useful, but make sure they are breathable, or they trap damp against the furniture.
Living with it
Hose or wipe the frame with fresh water every couple of weeks near the sea, and after storms, so salt does not build up on coatings and fixings.
Brush dry dust from the cushions first, then clean with mild soap and water. Let them dry standing on edge in shade.
Wipe sunscreen, oil and bird droppings off the fabric promptly. Left in the sun, they bake in and become hard to remove.
Bring cushions in for the heaviest rain and store them in an airy place, never tightly wrapped in plastic.
Plastic glides wear on tiles and stone. Replace them before bare metal scrapes the floor or sits in standing water.
Avoid these
A cushion with ordinary foam inside an outdoor cover still holds water for days. The core matters as much as the fabric.
Painted steel frames look fine at first and rust from the welds within a season or two in salt air.
Deep colours absorb the afternoon sun and become too hot to sit on. Choose mid-tones for exposed seats.
A sofa that blocks a sliding door or a swing door on a narrow balcony makes the space harder to use. Measure the clearance first.

FAQ
The frame can, if it is aluminium, stainless steel or synthetic weave. The cushions will drain and dry, but in Goa's heaviest months we still advise storing them somewhere dry and airy to keep them fresh for longer.
A solution-dyed acrylic or polyester outdoor fabric. The colour is part of the fibre, so it resists fading on a sunny balcony, and the weave sheds water and resists mould far better than cotton or ordinary upholstery cloth.
Mild steel will, often within a season. Powder-coated aluminium does not rust, and marine-grade stainless steel resists salt air well. Check the screws and fixings too, since low-grade fittings are usually the first thing to stain.
Measure the depth from wall to railing and leave at least a comfortable walkway in front of the seat. On most apartment balconies a shallow two-seater or a built-in bench works better than a full-depth sofa.
Yes. We measure the frame and make new cushions in quick-dry foam and outdoor fabric. Our outdoor and marine upholstery service covers loungers, swing seats and benches.
Only under a deep roof well back from the edge, and even then its frame and foam are not made for damp air. Where rain or sun reaches the seat, an outdoor frame with quick-dry cushions lasts far longer.
Older outdoor fabrics did. Many current solution-dyed weaves have a soft, matt hand close to indoor upholstery. We bring samples so you can compare them on the actual seat.
Use open-cell foam and mesh-based covers so they drain, stand them on edge to dry after rain, clean off sunscreen and food promptly, and store them somewhere airy during the wettest weeks.
Yes. If the frame is sound, we can make new cushions and covers in outdoor fabric. Our outdoor and marine upholstery work covers this, and our sofa covers service makes fitted covers for the frame itself.
Next step
We visit at a time when we can see the sun and wind on the space, measure the balcony, verandah or deck, and look at the doors, railings and drains around it. We bring outdoor fabric and foam samples to feel and see in the real light. Then we propose the frame, the cushion build and where they will be stored through the monsoon, and make it all to fit.
