Preparing the room
Residential project
Margao, South Goa
One wall of a newly finished upstairs room in Margao, papered in a geometric pattern of vertical blocks in brown, taupe and bronze over a fine horizontal texture. The room still had the dust of handover on the floor when these were taken: a split air-conditioner on the side wall, a brass wall light with a white glass shade on the papered wall, two switch plates, a white sheer on a rod at the window, and the ceiling sloping down towards the wall.

The details
The brief was to give an empty room a focus before any furniture arrived, and to do it on one wall rather than four. A large-scale pattern in close tones does that without shouting: from across the room it reads as a warm textured surface; up close the blocks and their shading become the point.
A second wall in the same house carries the same pattern in a cooler grey-green colourway, filmed just after hanging. The two rooms share the geometry and differ only in colour, which keeps the house feeling of a piece.
An empty new room with a settled character before a single piece of furniture went in, and a pattern that will sit quietly behind whatever does.
